Zirconium is a very strong, malleable, ductile, lustrous silver-gray metal, similar to hafnium and titanium. It is flammable in powder form, and highly resistant to corrosion and heat.
The main commercial use of zirconium is as zircon. Zircon is widely used in refractories, ceramic opacification, and foundry sands. Zirconium is also used as an alloying agent in materials that are exposed to aggressive environments.
Zirconium forms a variety of inorganic and organometallic compounds. Zirconium dioxide (zirconium oxide, zirconia zrO2) can withstand very high temperatures and is used to make crucibles and to line the walls of high-temperature furnaces.

The major end uses of zircon (ZrSiO4) are refractories, ceramic opacification, and foundry sands. Zircon is also marketed as a natural gemstone used in jewelry.
